Get to know Dr. Flanagan

What are some of your hobbies outside of work? I enjoy shooting sporting clays with my husband, and occasionally pheasant hunting. I also play the piano and love reading; My kids are active in hockey and tennis, so I also enjoy attending their events.  My family also participates in martial arts.

What is your favorite thing about your job? I enjoy the challenge and the camaraderie that occurs in the OR. I also like the satisfaction of being a “fixer,” which is what a lot of surgery is about.

If you weren’t a doctor, what would your dream job be? For as long as I can remember, I always wanted to be a doctor.

Where did you grow up? I grew up in central Illinois and graduated from the University of Illinois and Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. I then did my residency at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, MI., and joined Affinity in 1999.

What is the hottest trend in your industry? Laparoscopy and robotic surgery are both very popular. Everything is progressively more minimally invasive, which is cool technology and great for patients.
