Spreading the Joy of the Holidays to Families in Need

This guest blog post is by Tracy Ogden of the Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh

Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh logoAsk children at the Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh what their favorite part of the holidays are and you might be surprised to hear what they have to say!

Some will talk about Santa and the gifts he left under the tree. What these children do not know, however, is that those gifts came from friends at the Boys & Girls Club.

Another child may tell you “Christmas dinner!” What this child did not see was his mother accepting a piping hot meal from a Boys & Girls Club staff member at their door earlier in the evening.

Other Club members may tell you of their memorable experience at the Club’s annual Christmas party, where they visited with Santa himself, picked out gifts for their families, played fun games and indulged in a Christmas ham and all the fixings. For some families, this will be their only celebration.

No matter what answer you receive, children at the Boys & Girls Club are receiving support from their Club and, many times, they don’t even know it. The Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh is a youth development center that nurtures the self-esteem of young people by instilling in them a sense of belonging, usefulness, influence and competence. By providing Club members with a special holiday season (one that is equal to their peers at school), the Boys & Girls Club is improving their lives.
