Have you considered robotics for your hysterectomy?

shutterstock_64976767There are many circumstances where women have to undergo a hysterectomy, including uterine fibroids, endometriosis, cancer or hyperplasia to name a few. Traditional hysterectomies involve a large incision for better access, but did you know there are other, less invasive options?

Robotic surgery using the da Vinci® Surgical System might be the right choice for you. One thing we like to remind our patients of when we talk about robotics is that your surgeon is always in control. The procedure works like this. Your surgeon sits at a console near the operating table, and that console provides him or her with a magnified, 3D view of the procedure. The controls, which are operated by your surgeon and translated into tiny movements of the da Vinci instruments, offer more precision and control than traditional surgery.

Below you will find a list of some of the benefits of choosing robotic surgery over a traditional hysterectomy:

• Robotic surgery using the da Vinci System allows for a much smaller incision – one to two inches – which often results in faster recovery and less scarring.

• Smaller incision sizes and more precise, controlled movements result in significantly less pain and shorter hospital stays than a traditional hysterectomy.

• The amount of risk to organs and surrounding tissue is lower than traditional surgery. There is also reduced blood loss and reduced risk of infection.

• Patients can return to normal, day-to-day activities more quickly.
