How dry needling aids physical therapy treatment

When we overexert ourselves and damage our tissues, pain is usually an indication that it may be time to seek medical attention. If you’re suffering from a musculoskeletal injury—injury to the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments or nerves—physical therapy may be your best option for full recovery.

Musculoskeletal injuries can be caused by actions as simple as falls or direct hits to the muscles, and include fractures, sprains and dislocations. One physical therapy treatment that is growing in popularity for these injuries is dry needling. Dry needling uses a thin needle to penetrate the skin and stimulate underlying myofascial trigger points and muscular and connective tissues to decrease pain and restore full range of movement. I tell my patients to imagine a physical therapist placing a needle directly into their muscles’ “knots” to loosen them and promote tissue healing.

Dry needling is appropriate for treatment of numerous diagnoses ranging from acute injuries to chronic conditions, and can be performed on individuals of all ages. Some of the benefits include:

  • Decreased pain
  • Decreased movement impairments
  • Increased blood flow to tissues
  • Increased muscle relaxation
  • Decreased banding (tightness) in muscles, allowing the muscle to contract with less pain
  • Decreased inflammation in the tissues

New physical therapy clinic opening in Oshkosh

Koeller_clinicOn April 20, Mercy Medical Center will open a physical therapy rehabilitation clinic in the lower level of Affinity Medical Group’s clinic located at 1855 S. Koeller Street in Oshkosh. The new clinic will offer patients increased access to make appointments, a more convenient location near popular shopping centers and lots of convenient parking.

At this new clinic, we will help rehabilitate orthopedic and spine injuries including: shoulder, neck, back, hip, pelvis, knee, ankle and foot pain. We will also offer the following therapy services:

Managing chronic pain with physical therapy

Approximately 100 million Americans suffer from pain lasting longer than six months. Chronic, long lasting pain can be due to an injury or conditions like fibromyalgia or arthritis. People with chronic pain can become less active because of their pain, resulting in decreased muscle flexibility and strength, decreased activity endurance and unbalanced postures. When someone has chronic pain, it can be difficult to know how to start an exercise program safely without aggravating the pain. Exercise should be an important part of everyone’s routine, especially if you have chronic pain. Exercise releases natural endorphins, or brain chemicals, that help improve your mood while also blocking pain signals into the blood stream. Exercise has another pain-reducing effect: it strengthens muscles, helping prevent re-injury and further pain.

Physical therapy starts with an individualized assessment to determine each person’s individual needs. Just as people have different body types, they have different patterns of movement, different alignments and different habits. How physical therapy can help treat Post-Concussion Syndrome

Concussions are becoming increasingly common for people who play sports with physical contact. While typical recovery from a concussion can take from a few hours up to a few weeks, sometimes symptoms may last longer than normal. Post-concussion syndrome (PCS) is when typical concussion-related symptoms last for weeks, months or occasionally a year after a concussion. PCS is also possible when someone has been in a car accident or fallen and hit their head.

Symptoms of a concussion include:

  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Double vision/blurred vision
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Memory problems
  • Headaches, pressure in the head
  • Neck pain
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Sensitivity to light and/or noise
  • Feeling in a fog/not feeling “right”
  • Fatigue, low energy, depression, anxiety
  • Change in irritability, more emotional or change in personality

Females and young people are at a higher risk for PCS, as are those who have already experienced three or more concussions. Other risk factors are preexisting conditions such as migraines or learning disabilities. Continue Reading »
